Domestic Graft
Residential Addition and Renovation, Armonk, New York
A cantilevering addition is grafted onto the top of an existing two-story modernist home built in 1968. The addition contains new bedrooms and a void above the existing living room to create a new double-height space. The middle level encompasses the primary social spaces, and the lower level houses the garage, playroom, and a new double-height entry with an ascending stair. The existing volume is sheathed in zinc, and the addition is sheathed with cedar: both will patina over time to a natural gray.
